The Vancouver Open Network Initiative (VONIC) is a membership- owned and managed service Co-operative. We provide hardware and software to our members for the mesh networking of wireless (wifi) devices in the unlicensed part of the radio spectrum. We support community wireless Internet access through our sponsored project, FreeTheNet.ca.
Projects
In February 2008 we responded to the City of Vancouver's Request for Expressions of Interest for supplying a municipal wifi network.
VONIC is working with the Vancouver Community Net to provide FreeTheNet.ca service to the Lori Krill, Laura Jamieson, & Tidal Flats Housing Co-ops, as well as the 411 Seniors Center.
We are actively pursuing funding to provide our infrastructure for the Downtown Eastside's Portland Hotel Society, to provide blanket wifi coverage for residents and visitors.
We continue to expand our public community wifi service area throughout Greater Vancouver via our FreeTheNet.ca project.
